Recovery Code

What is a Recovery Code?

A recovery code is a one-time-use code that allows you to sign in to your account if you're unable to complete multifactor authentication (MFA). This may happen if you’ve switched to a new phone, lost your device or can’t access your authenticator app. Because they bypass the standard MFA process, we recommend following the best practices below for safely storing your recovery code.

Best Practices for Safely Storing Your Recovery Code

Do:

  •     Store it in a trusted password manager.
  • Treat it like a password and keep it private and secure.
  • Save it in a secure, offline location such as an encrypted USB drive or a locked file cabinet.
  • Label it clearly so you can identify which account it belongs to.

Don't:

  • Store it in your email inbox or drafts.
  • Save it in plain text on your computer or phone.
  • Write it down and leave it where others may find it.
  • Share it with anyone.
